The Managed Futures Advisor
The Managed Futures Advisor is a website that provides information to investors about the world of managed futures. Managed Futures are the one asset class across the spectrum of investments (stocks, bonds, ETF commodity funds) that have the potential to provide returns independent of economic and market conditions.
The Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs) who trade managed futures programs can trade a wide variety of asset classes, both long and short, including agricultural commodities such as grains and livestock, precious metals like gold and silver, currencies, energy, global stock indices, and interest rate contracts.
Because returns on managed futures investments have historically been noncorrelated to traditional asset classes like stocks and bonds, adding a component of managed futures to an investor's portfolio has the potential to enhance portfolio returns and reduce the overall risk of volatility.
Managed Futures vs. U.S. Stocks vs. International Stocks (Jan/1980 - Feb/2008)
"Portfolios...including judiscious investments...in leveraged managed futures accounts show substantially less risk at every possible level of expected return then portfolios of stocks (or stocks and bonds) alone."
Dr. John Lintner
Harvard University
Why Use Managed Futures?
Managed Futures have the potential to provide returns that are not correlated historically to traditional stock and bond returns. This type of diversification is a corner stone of Modern Portfolio Theory, developed by Nobel Prize winning economist Dr. Harry Markowitz. This theory documents how more efficient portfolios result from combining assets with low to negative correlation.
Benefits of Managed Futures
Opportunity to profit independent of economic environment
Access to expanding global marketplace
Potential to profit in both bull and bear markets
Opportunity for reduced portfolio volatility risk
Actively managed accounts vs. passive buy and hold strategy
Traders may go long or short, depending on market conditions
Potential for enhanced portfolio returns
Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results. Investing in Managed Futures involves substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for everyone. Many different market factors can affect the performance of a portfolio. Investors must read the disclosure document before they invest.
